What the Ephesus Experience Museum is like and where it is located
The Ephesus Experience Museum is located within the archaeological site of Ephesus. Specifically, between the Great Theatre and the Agora, not far from the terrace houses. Modern facilities were inaugurated there in 2023, consisting of a large open-plan cube inside which images of the history of the ancient Greco-Roman city are projected as a 360º video mapping. Therefore, it is always an interesting option for families or for visitors who are less expert in archaeology.
It has its own ticket offices for access control, although foreign visitors can enter the facilities free of charge simply by presenting their entrance ticket to the archaeological site. The main cafeteria is located next to the ticket offices, making the Ephesus Experience Museum a good place to stop along the way, changing the atmosphere mid-tour.
What is projected in this audiovisual museum
As mentioned, the Ephesus Experience Museum projects immersive images of the history of the ancient city of Ephesus: from a recreation of its natural landscapes to the daily life of its people, including their beliefs, daily activities, and other details. But most importantly, they are shown in a spectacular, impactful way, with special effects, music, and surround sound that make visitors believe they are inside the scene itself.
One of the pillars of the projection is the Temple of Artemis: this great monument, which came to be considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, was a magnet for pilgrims from all over the world, who landed in Ephesus to worship this goddess of the hunt, animals, forests, and mountains. And it is Artemis herself who appears before the visitor’s eyes, as if they were a pilgrim.
Specifically, it is the Ephesian Artemis, that is, the statue that was recovered from the temple itself and is now exhibited in the nearby Ephesus Archaeological Museum (outside the site, in Selçuk). Her striking appearance, with a pectoral of multiple breasts, provides an added visual impact to the projection. The famous fire that caused its destruction is also recreated on the room’s screens, evoking the great blow it dealt to the Greek Ephesus of the time.
A fundamental space in Ephesus and, therefore, in the video mapping of the Ephesus Experience Museum is the Library of Celsus, considered one of the most important in the ancient world, second only to that of Alexandria. And the Curetes Way, the city’s great axis, will come to life here to show the commercial and social atmosphere that reigned in this artery. As for atmosphere, the shows that took place in the stadium, including gladiator and beast fights, provide the show with an extra dose of adrenaline.
