How many days in Istanbul to explore the city thoroughly? One possible answer is between 3 and 5 days. This makes this Turkish city a perfect destination for a long weekend getaway or a mini-vacation. In this post, we explain the basis of our proposal and what places can be visited during these travel days.
2 days or less, hardly feasible
We will start by saying that dedicating 2 days to your trip to Istanbul is hardly feasible. It is likely that your flight will not be particularly short. And if your flight schedules are not ideal (flying early on the way there and boarding at the last minute on the way back), the effective time to enjoy this city will be very limited, barely an afternoon and/or a morning. And in Istanbul, there is so much to see!
3 days to visit Istanbul: the absolute essentials
3 days to visit Istanbul may still seem short, but we know that more time is not always available. So, at Turquía Exclusiva, we have a package specifically designed for this getaway, perfect for a long weekend. In it, the absolute essentials are:
- The so-called Old Peninsula, around Sultanahmet Square. That is, Hagia Sophia (its dome is one of the city’s great icons), the Blue Mosque (with refined blue decoration using local ceramics), and Topkapi Palace (former residence and government palace of the Ottoman sultans).
- The Grand Bazaar, one of the largest markets in the world and, above all, one of the most authentic and unique, with nearly 3,500 stalls selling handicrafts, gastronomy, and much more.
And of course, it is advisable to leave some free time to simply gaze at the Bosphorus Strait and marvel at the dimensions and strategic location of this city, which spans Europe and Asia.
Distributing these places over one or two days will depend on flight schedules, but it undoubtedly represents the ‘minimum essential’ that every visitor to Istanbul should experience.
4 days in Istanbul: several options
Adding one day to your trip to Istanbul greatly expands the range of options. The final choice will depend on each traveler’s preferences. Below are the main ones:
- Option 1: sail the waters of the Bosphorus Strait with a multi-hour cruise and, if possible, stop at iconic spots such as the famous Maiden’s Tower or Beylerbeyi Palace, one of the most sumptuous in the entire city.
- Option 2: delve into the Beyoglu district and explore its most characteristic corners. This undoubtedly involves climbing to the top of the Galata Tower, from where all of Istanbul can be seen, but also exploring modern and cosmopolitan Istanbul, especially Istiklal Caddesi and Galataport.
5 days in Istanbul: other plans
For a 5-day package in Istanbul, the choice might be easy: the one that was discarded in the previous section. But it’s not fair to say ‘discarded’ when talking about Istanbul, as all plans are five-star. Therefore, we mention three other possibilities here, just as interesting or more so than the previous ones, to make it easier for you (or harder, depending on how you look at it):
- Extra Option 1: visit Istanbul’s most outstanding historical sites and museums. In this case, we refer to the Archaeological Museums and the Basilica Cistern, true gems for lovers of Antiquity.
- Extra Option 2: hop over to the eastern shore of the city, where many believe the true daily pulse of Istanbul life is found.
- Extra Option 3: if you are content with the basics, our catalog includes short 5-day tours with Istanbul and another destination relatively close by plane, either Pamukkale or Ephesus.
